Editor’s Notes Website:
9th September 2008 Text messaging the way forward for spelling? Rubbish! "Text messaging, email, and internet chat rooms are showing us the way forward for English." Professor John Wells, President of the Spelling Society, intends proclaiming this at the Society’s Centenary Dinner this week. What rubbish! It is those means of communication that have accelerated the deterioration of the standard of English in recent years. Instead of abandoning spelling rules, they should be simplified – the alternative promoted by Simply Words Editing Services.Allowing people greater freedom to spell logically, as recommended by John Wells, who is also Professor of Phonetics at University College in London, would make text far harder to read. "The pace of life today is such that people don’t have the time to work out what someone is trying to convey in a letter or other document, when non-standard spellings of words have been used", says Dallas Willcox, the proprietor of Simply Words Editing Services. "Using shortened and contrived words may be appropriate in text messages, but extending this practice to formal documents would cause chaos." Editors’ Notes The spelling aid ‘Ten Simple Spelling Rules’ can be downloaded from the Simply Words Editing Services’ website: http://www.simplywords.co.uk.‘Ten Simple Grammar Rules’ and ‘Ten Simple CV (Curriculum Vitae) Rules’ can also be downloaded from that website. Simply Words Editing Services is a newly-established business offering quality proofreading and editing services to both individuals and businesses. Its proprietor, Dallas Willcox, has over 30 years’ experience in a communications/editorial environment. 11th June 2008 The Apprentice: Is 'ambtion' the secret of success? Is Lee McQueen’s success going to result in a deterioration in the quality of CVs and job applications? After all, spelling mistakes like 'tommorrow', 'ambtion', and 'recoinged' do not seem to have done him any harm… and where is ‘Atishu’ in the Oxford Dictionary? The question on the home page of Simply Words Editing Services’ website (http://www.simplywords.co.uk) - Need first class first impressions? – leads to the answer. Creating good first impressions is as important as ever. Usually, a prospective employer’s first impressions of a candidate are formed from a job application and/or CV. Lee was lucky – Sir Alan Sugar’s first impressions of him had been created long before Lee’s inaccuracies in his job application and CV were revealed. Thousands of job applications are discarded every day because of incorrect spelling, punctuation and/or grammar. The proprietor of Simply Words Editing Services, Dallas Willcox, says: "In my many years of employment as a manager, the biggest reason for applicants failing to obtain interviews was a poor standard of English in their application forms or CVs. "First impressions are so important when applying for employment. The job application or CV, sometimes with an accompanying letter, is usually all that a prospective employer has on which to form his or her first impressions." --- End --- Editors’ Notes Simply Words Editing Services is a newly-established business offering quality proofreading and editing services to both individuals and businesses.
